Between January and May 2024 I worked on a biopic project for university. We were tasked with choosing an influential figure and designing in mind of a biopic film about their lives. I chose Dame Margot Fonteyn (Margaret Evelyn de Arias), English ballerina of the Royal Ballet, appointed Prima Ballerina Assoluta by Queen Elizabeth II.
I am incredibly happy to be able to say that my hard work paid off and I received a High First for this module!

I made a costume re-creation of Oliver Messel's Princess Aurora design, worn by Fonteyn from the 1940s - 1960s. The show was Sleeping Beauty at the Royal Ballet. This costume is made specifically for the 'Rose Adagio' sequence of Act 1.
I created all of the appliqué by hand using silver twine backed onto a base fabric, then hand-stitched to the garment. The adornments have been made by hand also via individual sequin application, and the rhinestones hand-sewn over the appliqué.
The headpiece was made using unravelled gold cording, backed onto a black Alice-band, with rhinestones applied on top.

The tutu plate was created with stiff 'bright pink' tulle and soft 'cherry' tulle. It has twelve layers of pleated tulle, along side a bobbinet knicker with soft tulle ruffles.

I am fortunate enough to own an original programme from the Royal Ballet, courtesy of my great uncle Keith Morton. Keith was Wardrobe Master for a time during the 1960s whilst Fonteyn and her partner Rudolf Nureyev danced this ballet. Above is a photograph of the programme signed by the two dancers.
